January 2013
Dear Friends,
Happy New Year! The spring semester is already shaping up to be a busy one. This past week, I was able to attend Micah McLaurin's (past Honors Program student) performance with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra and Nick Bentz's (current Honors Program student) performance as part of the Music Matters series. I remember when they first auditioned for the Honors Program. It's amazing to see how far they've come as musicians and young adults. They are great examples of what the program is all about. They are dedicated musicians, remain active within the community, and provide inspiration to their peers. With many of our current Honors Program students graduating, we are looking to our younger students for our next group. On February 7, some of these potential Honors Program students will be performing at the Charleston Library Society. Performers will include Caleb Borick and Jenny Yao (piano), Ashley Yoon and Benjamin Halford (violin), and Justin Yu (cello). These students have been auditioning and entering competitions and performing throughout Charleston. They have shown tremendous growth over the years, and I couldn't be more proud of them. It's going to be a great performance!
If you've recently visited our website, you may have noticed the addition of a few new programs. We launched our volunteer opportunities page and added a woodwinds program. I'm excited to welcome instructors Christine Arant (flute) and Philip Lipton (clarinet) to our faculty. The addition of flute and clarinet lessons will be great for students who are interested/participating in school orchestras or bands. We also welcome assistant violin instructor Meghan Henson. Meghan has taught with our Kidzymphony Orchestra Program and will now be teaching privately at CAM. We are working on finalizing plans for our first year of the Charleston Summer Music program and will soon be adding information to the website. In partnership with the College of Charleston, the nine day program will offer masterclasses, chamber music, ensembles, and performance classes. Half day, full day, and residential options will be available. Stay tuned for an official announcement in the coming weeks.
Sincerely,
