Pianist Amy Tan currently studies with Enrique Graf at the College of Charleston, South Carolina under a scholarship. She is a recent recipient of the college’s prestigious Summer Undergraduate Research with Faculty (SURF) Grant which allowed her to perform in Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, SC and Music Fest Perugia 2010 in Perugia and Spoleto, Italy. In Spring 2010, Amy also received the School of the Arts Student of the Year Award from the Office of Multicultural Affairs of the College of Charleston. Since coming to Charleston in August 2009, Amy has performed in the Young Artist Series at the College of Charleston and Bishop Gadsden, Charleston Symphony Orchestra League (CSOL), and Piccolo Spoleto Festival at the College of Charleston. She has performed in solo, duo and chamber settings. While in Italy, she attended master classes and lessons with Alberto Portugheis, Ilana Vered, and Gregg Pauley.
Amy, a native of Malaysia, started studying piano at the age of three and earned her Diploma in Piano Performance from the London College of Music at 15. During her years in Penang, she participated annually in the Yamaha Music Festival, performing not only on the piano, but also the electone and the violin. While refining her piano-playing, she honed her violin skills with master classes under the mentorship of music director Kees Bakels from the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra. Amy has performed for noted Malaysian dignitaries. In addition, she has represented Malaysia in Singapore, Hong Kong, China, and Korea touring with different orchestras.
Amy was awarded a scholarship from the University of Florida in 2007 to study piano performance at New World School of the Arts (NWSA) in Miami, Florida where she was under the tutelage of Roberto Berrocal and Ciro Fodere. A regular in the NWSA’s Pianists Recital Series, she was also a first violinist with the Broward Symphony Orchestra in Fort Lauderdale, performing in the 2008 Winter Series.
